Essay plan tutorial

Introduction – lay out argument, primary text and any secondary/historical texts. Present your angle/hypothesis. You can mention a theory or two but don’t go into detail – save that for later. 250 words.

Section 1 – historical/secondary texts. I agree with starting here but I’m not sure on your historical texts. Why Mice & Men? Completely different genre – I would stay closer to superhero genre for this section. Perhaps look at Dark Knight for recent secondary text, Catwoman (2004), Elekra (2005). You will need to re-research this, perhaps go back to BFI Library, do more textual analysis. 500 words. Catwoman wasnt as successful maybe due to the fact that the society didn' want to see a female protagonist at that time. Supergirl too. 

Section 2 – Primary text: Wonder Woman. Textual analysis. Media key concepts etc. Quotes/reviews etc. 500 words.

Section 3 – Research and theory. Don’t try and cover everything here – e.g. Colonialism will probably drift you away from the question. Stick very firmly to gender and feminism – there will be plenty (even if you need to do some more research before writing the first draft). Research the Bechdel test. 600 words.

Section 4 – changes over time and effects theory. What effects do these representations have on audiences? Lots of media theory you can cover here and can look at impact on both male and female audiences. Think cultivation theory and any feminism research you’ve done that links to impact on young women. 400 words.

Section 5 – How this debate will look in future. Look at recent changes to gender roles in Hollywood films – you could mention Hunger Games here for example. How does the internet change this debate? Is pressure on women coming from social media rather than traditional media? Or are women using social media to offer different representations of women and challenge male patriarchy? E.g. Everyday Sexism project, #metoo. Could also add two step flow theory here too. 500 words.

Conclusion – sum up your argument, snappy ending please! 150 words.

  • ·         This essay has great potential – the key is making sure there is a strong thread running through it and you get into feminist theory. Really get into the discussion and try and cover different sides to the debate. I also think the section on new technology and feminism in the future has great potential.

To what extent does Magic Mike XXL defy the stereotypical role of men in film?  Initial discussion: can you deconstruct and offer an answer to this question?  -In the 2015 feel-good movie about male strippers which was Magic Mike XXL, the males are represented as quite feminist due to their representation within the movie to fulfill their female audiences. However, they were also represented as a stereotypical representation of men. Wonder Woman (2017) – Primary Text The changing representation of females in mainstream films. Hypothesis: I do think that the portrayal of females in mainstream films has changed over the years.
