Critical Investigation

To what extent does Magic Mike XXL defy the stereotypical role of men in film?

Initial discussion: can you deconstruct and offer an answer to this question?
-In the 2015 feel-good movie about male strippers which was Magic Mike XXL, the males are represented as quite feminist due to their representation within the movie to fulfill their female audiences. However, they were also represented as a stereotypical representation of men.

How are men typically represented in Hollywood Cinema?
-In Hollywood Cinema, men are typically represented as more of the masculine gender rather than females. They are deemed as the powerful and the privileged gender. An evidence would be within the Hollywood hit movie "The Godfather", males were represented as very masculine and dangerous as they had weapons and were very violent. They took authority of some other females showing men's power which is a stereotypical representation of male.

The Magic Mike films focus on a group of male strippers. How might you expect the film to both challenge and reinforce traditional masculine stereotypes?
-Within the Magic Mike XXL movie, the personalities of men challenge traditional masculine stereotype of men as we see the male characters as the ones that are very emotionally sensitive that tend to shed tears in the movie. This challenges the masculine stereotypes of male as we see the male gender as more of the masculine one where they have so much power over the females.

-However, the movie also reinforces traditional masculine stereotypes as within the movie, the male strippers take authority of the females watching them. Usually, the strippers are chosen by the consumers but in the movie, we still see the males have authority over the females as they choose what females they are going to woo. This shows men's power and masculinity.

Thinking about the wider context, what impact might gender stereotypes have on society in general?
-The representations of females tend to be weak, quiet, incompetent, motherly and submissive which can have an impact on the society in general. On females, the stereotypes of females could impact them in a way that they could become more insecure about themselves and might not participate in some activities due to it. Also, in many workplaces, women tend to be rejected for men because of their stereotypes.

-The representations of males tend to be very masculine, dominance, active, athleticism and being in complete control of emotions. This has an impact on the society in general as for the males that do not meet these stereotypes of men, they would be seen in a negative light. They could end up being verbally and physically insulted by other males and females too. However, males tend to be looked for more by employers in jobs such as stockings and etc because they are "known" to be more masculine and active than the females.

What key media concepts and theories could be covered in this critical investigation?
-"Uninvited attention from other men and unsettles traditional heterosexual masculinity which devalues men's power"
-Female gaze - Kaplan's Theory

What linked production piece could work with a critical investigation like this?
-A short film would work very well with this critical investigation in the sense that they can represent men in a feminist way.
