Textual Analysis

This particular scene consists of a brutal fight between the females who are the amazons against the German soldiers who were all males. The fight errupted as soon as the male pilot invaded the island which the German soldiers followed and they also invaded the island afterwards. Then the amazons vs the German soldiers fight became apparent.

I chose this scene specifically because I thought it was a very defining and a spectacular scene that almost represents females as very strong and fearless even though many of the amazons can be seen dead. The representation of all females being dominant against males in one scene is very unusual in Hollywood movies, even a strong female character.

The use of editing such as the slow motion effect when the female character jumped and killed 3 soldiers with one bow made it look more dramatic in the sense that the audiences are given a more detailed and a slower version of the attack. Also, the slo motion scene gave the audience to have a glance at the fearless and strong female character.

The iconography of the German soldiers being armed with guns and the amazons being armed with less advanced weapons just shows how females were more powerful and dominant in this scene and it gives the audience a sense of how strongly the females will be represented. Also, the iconography of when the female character died towards the ending of the scene, all the females were sad but not to the point where they were sobbing and crying which in many other Hollywood movies, they would. In this movie and the scene, it represents females as more strong and able to emotionally handle themselves.

The codes and conventions within this scene is certainly the dramatic fight between the amazonians and the soldiers. It fits in with the genre of action film and superhero film. Also, the iconography of the costumes the females were wearing and especially a unique costume for Wonder Woman is a code for the superhero and fantasy film genre. It is very typical to see costumes in superhero films.

In terms of the sound used within this scene, it was more of the dramatic crescendo sounds which were non-diegetic sounds. They were used to make the fight scene more dramatic which for the audiences, it would be more exciting for them.

This scene is the bar scene where Steve Trevor takes Wonder Woman into the bar to meet some of the male companions she will be working with. The idea that Wonder Woman is taken to find help from males shows how males still dominate in the Hollywood mainstream films. The representation of females is changing positively but it still isn't there yet as we can see within this scene that Wonder Woman is the only female character and is surrounded by males.

Also, a particular clip of the scene is where Steve Trevor introduces his friend "Sameer" to Wonder Woman. Instantly, he is attached to look at her face and her body which suggests how females are still seen as sexual objects with the female gaze theory of how females are perhaps there to be looked at by the audiences. Essentially, it shows how males still dominate females and how females are still objectified in Hollywood films. Also, at 3:28 of the clip, Sameer says "I am both frightened and aroused". The word "frightened" essentially summarises the representation of Wonder Woman but however, the word "aroused" suggests how females are always sexually objectified in films.

The sound used within this scene links well with the actions happening. When the group start to have a discussion about helping in war, a natural sound of people in the background talking is put on to make the discussion feel more natural and authentic. Moreover, when the fight errupts with the bold character with the gun,  a very dramatic non-diegetic sound is used to make the fight scene very entertaining.

The editing also links in with whats happening within the scene. The editing in this particular scene is slow which matches the speed of the discussion too. From the start, the build up was very slow to the discussion within the group; it focused heavily on the discussion which is why the editing pace was slow as it wanted the audiences to catch and understand what was being said.
